Deb Henson

For At-Large City Councilor

I will advocate for your voices and priorities to become reflected in the city budget. I am collaborative, engaged and love Northampton. I value true transparency and constituent involvement in governing, not just public comments.

The Leadership Our City Needs

A strong advocate for all residents. Soliciting constituents’ opinions. Transparency in government. Team approach to decision-making, with constituents’ values and priorities brought to the table by elected city councilors. Formulation of a fiscally responsible budget each year that reflects the values of the majority, not simply the mayor’s priorities. I will solicit and listen to your views and advocate for your priorities to shape the budget process. My vision is a collaborative process with the majority values becoming the working budget. My values: FULLY FUND OUR SCHOOLS AND CITY SERVICES. I believe in fiscal stability but not at the expense of (1) failing our children’s education and IEPs, or (2) neglecting our residents who have limited mobility being able to access public walkways.

A Vision For The Future

Leadership can be inclusive, collaborative, engaging of all residents of Northampton. When was your opinion sought by your current city councilors? I will establish email listservs in each Ward to encourage residents to send me your ideas, concerns, priorities. Instead of the administration preparing a budget that presents only a portion of the available money, councilors will consider the “whole pie” and determine the manner of slicing the pieces to reflect the values of our residents: to educate all our children and teens, to enable DPW to create safe sidewalks and streets so that all people can safely walk, bike, and drive in our city.

Vision

Actionable Issues

Our schools are in crisis. Classes in elementary schools are overcrowded. IEPs are not being satisfied, so the most vulnerable kids are lacking the support that they are legally mandated to receive. Our sidewalks and streets pose hazards to our residents, especially those in wheelchairs. Is this what the majority of our residents want? I do not think so and want to fight for your voices and choices – after all, it is YOUR tax dollars being spent. Are you happy with the current budgetary priorities where $12 million was leftover at the end of the last two years proving the city is underbudgeting for our schools and city services, while the mayor then directs the surplus “free cash” at year’s end into the stability reserve fund for future projects?

About Deb

I am a “hybrid” solo practitioner in Louisiana and Colorado: Lawyer and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My law practice areas include mental health law, adoption (Louisiana), and appellate writing. My clinical practices in New Orleans, Austin, and Denver included psychotherapy (adults, couples, families), clinical consultation, and parent facilitation (assisting divorced couples in co-parenting their children in a reduced-conflict manner). In Northampton, I have opened a Life Planning Coaching practice offering individual, family, business, and legal event preparation coaching.

My hybrid professional background (clinician and lawyer) gives me a unique perspective to assisting others with various issues. I also am a strong advocate for children and those whose voices are not generally heard and valued. I have advocated for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and civil rights for those with disabilities.
